MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Office for the Establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court says the passage of the legislation establishing the court is a critical step ahead of the 81st UN General Assembly in the United States.

The Executive Director of the Office, Cllr. Jallah Barbu, noted that the legislative action demonstrates Liberia’s commitment to addressing the legacy of the country’s civil conflict.

He stressed that the passage will strengthen Liberia’s position when the country engages international partners and the UN on issues of justice, accountability, and reconciliation.

According to him, establishing the court is also important in restoring public confidence in Liberia’s justice system and sending a clear message that perpetrators of serious crimes cannot escape accountability.

Cllr. Barbu is urging all stakeholders to support the implementation of the War and Economic Crimes Court, as Liberia prepares to participate in the 81st UN General Assembly and present its progress on the long-standing issue of accountability.
