MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Government of Liberia says it has agreed to accept 1,200 people being transferred from the U.S. over migration-related matters.
The Minister of Information, Jerolinmek Piah, said the first twenty persons are expected to arrive in Liberia on Thursday, August 20, 2026.
Addressing the Ministry of Information regular news conference on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, Minister Piah said:” Liberia’s decision to accept third-country nationals from the U.S. is in keeping with the country’s humanitarian tradition”.
Minister Piah said the individuals include nationals of African and Western Hemisphere countries who have been medically authorized to travel.
He disclosed that the Liberian Government has made preparations for the reception of the first group at the Roberts International Airport and their stay in the country.
The information minister emphasized that those being transferred will be received as guests of the country and should be accorded full Liberian hospitality.
At the same time, Justice Minister Cllr. Oswald Tweh has defended Liberia’s handling of arrangements involving the acceptance of third-country nationals.
Minister Tweh said:” Liberia’s approach should be viewed within the broader context of international migration, asylum, and immigration practices”.
He explained that countries have legal systems for determining whether individuals meet the requirements to remain in their territories.
Minister Tweh, however, said: Authorities must consider the circumstances of individuals who may be unable or unwilling to return, particularly when returning them could expose them to serious risks”.
