WONGOSOL Calls for Justice, Reconciliation 23 Years After Peace Deal

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Twenty-three years after the signing of the Accra Comprehensive Peace Agreement, the Women NGOs Secretariat of Liberia, WONGOSOL, is calling for renewed efforts toward truth, justice, accountability, and reconciliation.

The call was made Tuesday, August 18, 2026, by the Executive Director of WONGOSOL, Esther Yango, during a Memory and Reconciliation Session in Montserrado County.

According to her, the August 18, 2003 peace agreement ended Liberia’s prolonged civil conflict and opened the way for peace and democratic governance.

The WONGOSOL Executive Director said lasting peace must go beyond the absence of war, noting that many survivors and communities continue to live with painful memories and unresolved grievances.

The organization says women, young people, survivors and other marginalized groups must have a stronger voice in national and community efforts addressing justice and reconciliation.

The session brings together survivors, elders, young people, community leaders, civil society and government representatives to share experiences and identify pathways toward healing and sustainable peace.

The engagement is being held under the PeaceGen Liberia Project, funded by the European Union, co-funded by the Embassy of Ireland and led by the Kvinna till Kvinna Foundation.

WONGOSOL is collaborating with OWECC-L and LIMASA to ensure survivor experiences contribute to broader discussions on transitional justice, accountability and reparations.

WONGOSOL noted that the Montserrado session is the first of three, with additional engagements planned for Bomi on August 21 and Bong on August 25.

Madam Yango also urged Liberians to learn from the past, strengthen intergenerational dialogue and make concrete commitments to ensure that the violence and suffering of Liberia’s civil war are never repeated.
