MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The National Elections Commission (NEC) has vowed to remain firm on ensuring compliance with legal requirements governing political parties in Liberia.

NEC Chairman Jonathan Weedor said:” While multi-party democracy is essential to Liberia’s democratic system, it must not operate at the detriment of the state, nor be allowed to undermine the country’s electoral laws”.

He emphasized that NEC will intensify inspections of registered political parties and their offices to determine whether they meet the requirements established by law.

According to Chairman Weedor, the inspection will ensure only political parties that are in compliance with established standards will participate in the electoral process.

The NEC Chairman also warned that the Commission will not hesitate to cancel the registration of political parties that fail to meet the legal requirements.

 Meanwhile, the NEC has proposed a significant increase in candidate registration fees ahead of the 2029 General and Presidential Elections.

According to NEC Chairman Jonathan Weedor, under the proposed structure, Presidential Candidates will pay 10,000 United States Dollars, a significant jump from the 2,500 previously charged.

This new structure could also see Senatorial Candidates and Representative Candidates paying 7,000 and 3,000, respectively, to contest future elections.

Weedor also believes such an amount will boost the country’s revenue in getting the necessary materials needed to conduct Liberia’s elections.

 He said the new plan is not intended to stop any Liberian of their political rights, but to ensure policies are instituted to meet international standards.

The NEC Chairperson spoke Wednesday when he appeared on ELBC’s Super Morning Show.
