MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Human Rights Officer at the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Lector Williams, has urged journalists to actively strengthen their human rights reporting, describing the media as an essential partner in promoting accountability.

Speaking during a one-day human rights training for journalists on Thursday, July 23, 2026, Madam Williams said:” The training was designed to enhance journalists’ capacity to monitor, report, and advocate effectively on human rights issues across Liberia”.

She encouraged participants to treat the training as an interactive learning platform by asking questions, sharing experiences, and engaging resource persons whenever presentations required further clarification.

The Human Rights officer emphasized that advancing human rights requires collaboration among government institutions, civil society organizations, and development partners working toward common national objectives.

She thanked participants for attending the training and expressed confidence that the knowledge gained would strengthen professional reporting and promote greater public awareness of human rights.

At the same time, Press Union of Liberia President, Julius Kanubah, has called on journalists to champion human rights through ethical reporting, describing press freedom as indispensable for protecting democracy and fundamental freedoms.

Kanubah emphasized that journalists remain central to advancing accountability, justice, and universal rights.

He said the Press Union of Liberia serves not only as the umbrella organization for journalists but also as a leading institution promoting freedom of expression and safeguarding media rights nationwide.

The press union president called on government, civil society, and private sector institutions to protect journalists while encouraging the media to amplify voices of youth, women, persons with disabilities, and marginalized communities.

He then cautioned participants to apply ethical journalism principles, reject misinformation and disinformation, and strengthen human rights reporting to support Liberia’s democratic and inclusive national development.
