KAKATA, MARGIBI COUNTY, LIBERIA-Press Union of Liberia President, Julius Kanubah, says the welfare of journalists remains one of the most pressing issues in Liberia’s media sector.
Speaking at the official celebration of World Press Freedom Day 2026 in Kakata, Margibi County, on Monday, May 4, 2026, Kanubah noted that many journalists continue to earn poverty-level wages.
The PUL President stressed that genuine press freedom cannot exist when journalists are forced to live in hardship.
He said,” Many media professionals face health challenges and other difficulties that often leave them dependent on public appeals for support, which is deeply troubling”.
Kanubah disclosed that the Union is currently engaged in discussions to improve journalists’ welfare and safety across Liberia.
Kanubah is, therefore, calling for sustained commitment from the government, media institutions, and stakeholders to address these systemic challenges and safeguard the integrity of the journalism profession.
At the same time, the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) has committed to strengthening collaboration with the Liberian media for enhanced transparency and accountability.
LRA assured the public of continued openness and constructive engagement with the media to foster tax policies in the Country.
The Liberian revenue body also wants journalists to uphold high standards in the digital era to increase tax compliance and revenue growth.
The Authority believes exercising the highest standard of professionalism will intensify ongoing efforts to boost domestic revenue mobilization.
LRA’s commitment is contained in a statement delivered on Monday by the Authority’s Acting Head of Communications, Jerry Siakor, during the commemoration of World Press Freedom Day in Kakata, Margibi County.
