ECOWAS Amb.to Liberia Praises Liberia’s Efforts against Gender-Based Violence

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Ambassador of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to Liberia, Josephine Nkrumah, says Liberia is making significant efforts against gender-based violence.

Ambassador Nkrumah said,” Through regional efforts and national initiatives, Liberia has demonstrated to protecting the rights of women and girls, and to promoting gender equality”.

The ECOWAS Ambassador made the remarks on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, at the opening of a four-day ECOWAS National Training Workshop on Prevention and Response to Gender-Based Violence and Sexual Harassment for the benefit of Judicial, Health, and Social Actors in Monrovia.

Ambassador Josephine Nkrumah underscored that the Government of Liberia is expanding prevention, responding, and supporting services in the fight against Gender-Based Violence.

According to her, the regional body will continue collaborating with the Government of Liberia to address existing issues of Gender-Based Violence in the country.

At the same time, the Head of the National Civil Society Council of Liberia, Loretta Pope-Kai, is calling for the continued strengthening of community awareness campaigns on GBV.

Madam Pope-Kai stressed that such efforts are crucial to ensuring the prevention of GBV and reducing the high number of GBV cases across the country.

She said,” Strengthening community awareness programs will also promote gender equality and encourage community participation”.

Madam Pope-Kai called for the strengthening of data collection and monitoring.

The Head of the National Civil Society Council of Liberia said that reliable data helps to assess trends, identify gaps, and guide evidence-based programs.
