Nat’l Asso. of Kpelle Speaking People Petitions Nat’l Legislature…

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The National Association of Kpelle Speaking People of Liberia has petitioned the National Legislature to reject the proposed bill seeking to abolish the Sande Society.

The Group, in its petition, called on lawmakers to, instead, promote dialogue between the Government of Liberia and traditional leaders to modernize certain practices.

Their petition was presented to members of the National Legislature on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, on Capitol Hill in Monrovia.

While acknowledging certain harmful practices, it believes that dialogue is the most effective way to promote positive reforms.

According to the group, the Sande Society teaches moral culture, education for women and girls in Liberia, arguing that abolishing it would affect the identity of the country’s heritage.

Receiving the petition, the Chairperson of Claims and Petition, Montserrado County Representative, Prince Toles, termed the document as vital and promised to submit the instrument to the plenary.
