MONROVIA, LIBERIA-President Joseph Boakai has pledged the Liberian Government’s support to the Liberia Intellectual Property Office (LIPO) and the Commerce Ministry to ensure the signing and ratification of two protocols.
The protocols include the Arusha and Kampala protocols of the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO).
The President’s commitment was disclosed by the Director General of LIPO, Garmai Koboi, at MICAT’s Regular Press Briefing on Thursday, October 16, 2025, in Monrovia, following a three-day visit to Liberia by a high-level ARIPO delegation.
Madam Koboi said,” The ARIPO delegation’s visit was concluded with a meeting with President Boakai, who pledged the Liberian Government’s commitment to ratifying the Arusha Protocol for the protection of new varieties of plants and the Kampala Protocol on voluntary Registration of Copyrights”.
The ARIPO delegation, headed by its Director General, met with the Acting Minister of State for Presidential Affairs, Samuel Stevquoah, Commerce Minister Magdalene Dagoseh, officials of the Agriculture Ministry, and members of the House of Representatives’ Foreign Affairs Committee.
The Arusha Protocol establishes legal protections for plant breeders across Africa, including researchers at the Central Agriculture Research Institute, aiming to encourage agricultural innovation.
The LIPO boss said,” Accession and ratification of the treaty will attract investment in agricultural development, while supporting food security initiatives, according to the statement.
