Liberia Lone Star’s quest to taste Fifa World Cup glory was hit with a serious blow Thursday away at the Olympic Hamadi Agrebi stadium in Redes, Tunis Tunisia.
The Lone Star suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia in round 7 of the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifier for Africa.
The home side took advantage of an early minute defensive error by Mark Pabai to get themselves in front with Hazem Mastouri loving a free ball over the unsettled Tommy Songo.
The Lone Star show lack of coordination and confidence after that early minute goal which came in 5 minutes from the start, thus enabling the home team to dedict the match.
Captain Oscar Dorley tried to rally his team mates to put up a fight, but the Lone Star players looked unconvinced.
The Tunisians dominated the first 45 minutes at the pleasure of their fans with the visiting Lone Star failing a goal attempt.
Back from recess, the home team continued from where they left it in the first half, pressurizing the Lone Star.
Ferjani Sassi increased the Tunisians lead in the 66th minute when he headed into an empty Liberian net a cross from a set piece with the Lone Star goalkeeper nowhere.
Just when fans thought the game was over, with the 90 minutes exhausted, the Tunisians made good of a last effort, when Elias Saad volley a set piece from 22 yards to beat keeper Songo for the Eagles 3rd of the match.
The Tunisians moved on 19 points with that clean-sheet victory, while the Lone Star remained in 3rd despite Equatorial Guinea’s 3-2 win over Sao Tome. The Guineans are levelled on ten points with the Lone Star but have a negative goal difference.
Responding to the defeat, Lone Star Coach told the media that his side loss because of technical mistakes.
“Basically, from our own analysis we made lots of mistakes technically that led to our defeat. With all fairness the teams that played the Tunisians played like they wanted to win” said Coach Kojo.
It’s not yet over for the Lone Star as they can get their arks back together with a win on Monday against Malawi who are beneath them.
The Lone Star delegation is leaving Tunis for Malawi of Friday ahead of the match on Monday.
