Liberia’s Gender Ministry to Remove Children Selling on Streets

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Gender Ministry has begun a robust outreach initiative to remove from the streets all children involved in street selling.

Gender Minister Gbeme Horace Kollie said, “A resurgence of children selling in the streets has been observed with children still seen at major intersections, street corners and between moving vehicles”.

Minister Kollie noted that the exercise is part of a month-long special operation under the theme:” Zero Children Street Selling”.

The campaign forms an integral part of the ministry’s broader five-year transformative agenda, “Save the Future Project”, which is currently in its pilot phase in Montserrado County.

The Gender Minister said,” The ongoing practice of street selling by minors poses risks to their safety, health and long-term development, undermining their rights to a secured and dignified childhood”.

Meanwhile, the ministry has warned all parents, guardians, and caregivers to desist from violating the rights of children.
