MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Transitional Justice Actor Dr. Aaron Weah has described the memorialization of former Presidents and citizens killed during the 14-year civil war as a key component of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) recommendations.
Dr. Weah said, “Under memorialization, the TRC recommended a national reconciliation, healing and unity program, something that the government has implemented along with a former state apology from the President.”
The Director Institute for Social and Economic Research dismissed the perception from some individuals that the ongoing process is a Unity Party-led effort for political reasons.
According to Dr. Weah, while the government takes steps to implement the TRC recommendations, such a move must come with strong commitment and support to the Office of War and Economic Crimes Court.
Dr. Aaron Weah argued that fully realizing Transitional Justice after the civil unrest can only be achieved through understanding the root cause of the conflict, accountability, and reconciliation.
