Liberia Telecom. Authority’s Survey Reveals Sharp Increase in Internet Usage, Accessibility…

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-A recent survey conducted by the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) reveals a sharp increase in internet usage and accessibility among Liberians.

The LTA’s survey also shows that most Liberians get information through the internet, prompting the urgent need to curtail the spread of fake news and disinformation.

LTA Acting Chairman, Abdullah Kamara, said the recent survey was intended to gather valuable insights on public perception about the quality of service in the telecommunication sector.

Mr. Kamara also told the Super Morning Show on Tuesday that findings from the survey also show that most members of the public do not know the main function of the LTA.

According to him, the LTA Management has decided to create more awareness about its regulatory functions and work closely with all stakeholders to ensure quality in service delivery.

Meanwhile, the Acting LTA Chairman has maintained that the ongoing rerouting of the only fiber-optic cable providing essential internet connectivity in Liberia was based on expert advice.

The fiber-optic cable was installed underground along the sea in the PHP Community, Central Monrovia, in 2011 to provide high-speed internet service to Liberia.

However, certain infrastructure of the PHP Sports Park at the back of the BTC Barrack has been suppressing the cable, thus causing repeated fluctuations in internet connectivity.

In an interview on the Super Morning Show on Tuesday, LTA Acting Chairman, Abdullah Kamara, assured that the ongoing rerouting process will have no significant impact on the Park.

Mr. Abdullah Kamara also disclosed that the Cable Consortium of Liberia (CCL) has even urged the government to relocate the existing cable from land to deep sea.

According to the LTA Acting Chairman, the government has given Orange the green light to procure an alternative cable as a backup to the only fiber-optic cable for increased internet connectivity.
