Justice Minister Tweh Wants Gov. Strengthen Prosecution Team

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Justice Minister Cllr. Oswald Tweh says strengthening the Government of Liberia’s Prosecution Team is required to avoid losing cases in courts.

Cllr. Tweh said:” The Government will invest in getting sufficient evidence before prosecuting any case or drawing up indictments against individuals.”

Attorney General Tweh spoke Wednesday, August 7, 2024, in an ELBC interview in Monrovia.

Cllr. Tweh disclosed that the new strategy of the Government’s prosecution is premised on ensuring that justice is served, and not based on the prosecution of cases.

Justice Minister Oswald Tweh assured members of the Government’s Prosecution Team are fully prepared, though there is a need for more resources.

Meanwhile, Attorney General Tweh says pre-trial detention is impacting overcrowding at the sixteen official prison facilities in the country.

He said:” The Government will be constructing additional prison facilities to reduce overcrowding and increase the number of Correction Centers.”

The Justice Minister said currently the sixteen prison facilities account for over three thousand seven hundred inmates.

Cllr. Tweh said the new five-year strategic plan of the Justice Ministry includes a revised Alternative Dispute Resolution to encourage off-court settlement.

According to him, matters that should be settled out of court are being sent to court, something that is burdening courts’ dockets and increasing pre-trial detention.
