“Pres. Boakai is still committed to War and Economic Crimes Court Establishment”-Info. Minister Piah

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah says President Joseph Boakai is still committed to the establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court.

Minister Piah, however, clarified that it is not the Executive Branch of Government that will initiate the process of establishing the Court contrary to public perception.

In an interview on ELBC’s Super Morning Show on Monday, March 4, 2024, the Information Minister stated that the process of War and Economic Crimes Court by law must first emanate from the National Legislature.

Minister Piah said:” President Joseph Boakai still has the political will and commitment to set up the Court, following legislative procedure.

According to him, until the right process is followed, the attention and priorities of the Government of Liberia remain to address the day-to-day issues affecting Liberians across the Country.

At the same time, Minister Jerolinmek Piah, who is also Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Liberia Broadcasting System (LBS), has announced plans by the Liberian Government to resubmit a bill seeking to make the LBS a public broadcaster.

The bill was submitted during the administration of former President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf by former Representative George Mulbah.

Minister Piah said the bill is essential to getting the System to operate void of politics.

Information Minister Piah said:” Without legislation to make it a public broadcaster, LBS will always be drawn into intense politics and sometimes used as political machinery against opposition.”

Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah then promised to lead the charge, with the endorsement of President Joseph Boakai, to resubmit the bill shortly.
