Senate criticizes its Statutory Committees…..

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Statutory Committees of the Liberian Senate have come under sharp criticisms by members of that body, including its leadership, following the resumption of the last session.

According the Senate, members of the Statutory Committees have underperformed after failing to do the people’s work for which they were elected.

The Senate said it could not make any decision on issues arising from some Government ministries and agencies, in the absence of report from its Statutory Committees during the last budget year.

But the Senate, through its Chairperson on Rules and Orders, Senator Nyonblee-Karngar Lawrence, has returned to the Committee of the Whole to remedy the situation.

Meanwhile, the Liberian Senate says it is in receipt of complaints from members of that august body arising from Government ministries and agencies in 2022.

The Senate said it has resolved and mandated the Committees of the Whole to begin an inquiry on critical issues of national significance, early this week.

The complaints, among other things, highlight ted the lack of drugs at some health centers and delays in the disbursement of County Development Funds.

Other issues of inquiry include the stalemate of Western Cluster Company in Bomi County, illegal mining in Western Liberia and voluntary teachers’ welfare, among others.

Meanwhile, the Senate has cited several ministries and agencies of the Liberian Government to appear before the Committee of the Whole this week.

They include the Ministries of Mines and Energy, Finance, Health, Education, Justice, the National Investment Commission, the Liberia Medical and Dental Association, among others.
