Liberian Senate clarifies Controversial Integrated Pension and Benefits Bill

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Liberian Senate has clarified the Controversial Integrated Pension and Benefits Bill for certain categories of Government officials.

Speaking in Chambers on Monday, September 12, 2022, the Senators clarified that their move to amend the 2003 Integrated Pension and Benefits Scheme was intended to safe Government form huge pension debts.

The Senators said the 2003 law calls for fifty-percent pension benefits for President, Vice President, Members of the National Legislature and the Judiciary.

They noted that the Senate amended version only calls for President, Vice President, and Justices receiving fifty-percent, while Members of the National Legislature will receive ten-percent upon retirement.

Senators, including Jeremiah Koung, Francis Paye and James Biney, added that the action of the House of Representatives to drop legislative proceedings in handling the bill was intended to incite the public against the Senate.

Meanwhile, the Senate has voted to review the bill, including the current civil servant law through public hearings.
