LEC Workers’ Union Chairman Vows to Fight Power Theft as MOL resolves pay cut impasse

Liberia Electricity Corporation Workers Union Chairman Richard Fisk has vowed to campaign against power theft in the country.

Mr. Fisk said, he has the ‘know-how’ to fight illegal connection and wrongful access to the national power grid.

Fisk is a long time employee of the LEC, assigned at the Mount Coffee hydro dam in Harrisburg and has vital information and data to track down any power theft syndicates.

His pronouncement comes at a time government is strategizing means of combating power theft and welcoming individual contributions from citizens.

According to Fisk, he is looking up to support from the LEC Management mainly in the areas of security and administrative will to punish those proven to be culpable of power theft within the system.

The LEC workers union Chairman was speaking Wednesday during a dispute resolution round-table between the Management and employees of the Corporation.

The round-table was about alleged four months unpaid wages resulting from a 30 percent pay cut from August to November, last year.

Meanwhile a memorandum of understanding has been signed between the LEC workers union and the Management.

The MOU authorizes the Management to remit the 30 percent pay cut in April, this year, which amounts to eight hundred thousand United States Dollars.

Labour Minister Cllr. Charles Gibson’s intervention Wednesday gave the LEC Management a two-installment payment plan from April to May, with one month contingency in case of any unforeseen circumstances.

Recently employees of the LEC embarked on a strike action creating serious disharmony amongst workers and stalling effective operations of the national power supplier.

The Labour Minister commended both parties for exercising high level of civility during the exchanges and urged them to maintain a cordial work atmosphere at the LEC.
