Nat’l Elections Commission submits $1.9 million to Senate for the conduct of By-Election

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The National Elections Commission (NEC) has submitted to the Liberian Senate a budget of one-point-nine-million United States Dollars, for the conduct of By-Election in Lofa County.

It followed a notification to the NEC of the existence of vacancy in the Senate for a seat in Lofa County.

According to ELBC Legislative Reporter, the Commission has set May 10, 2022, as timeline for the conduct of the Senatorial By-Election in the County.

The Senate’s notification was triggered by the Supreme Court’s conviction of Lofa County Senator-elect Brownie Samukai.

Article 37 of the Liberian Constitution states that in the event of a vacancy in the Legislature caused by death, resignation, expulsion or otherwise, the presiding officer shall within thirty days notify the National Elections Commission.
