MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Foreign Minister Maxwell Kemayah has represented President George Weah at the 3^rd ECOWAS Extraordinary Summit, with a call on Malian Authorities to adhere to the transitional process.

Minister Kemayah said:” Liberia is concerned about the worsening security situation in Mali and the alleged hiring of Russian Mercenaries by authorities.”

According to him, mediators have warned that if the situation is not addressed, it could have negative consequences for the entire ECOWAS Region.

The Liberian Foreign Minister indicated that the transitional period agreed upon continues to be violated by the actions of Mali’s Transitional Administration.

He named the recent decision by Malian Authorities to expel the ECOWAS Permanent Representative as troubling.

Meanwhile, on the issue of Guinea, Minister Kemayah said Liberia is concerned about continuous delay by the Guinean Authorities, to specify the transitional activities consistent with the mandate of the Authority of Heads of State and Government.

Meanwhile, Minister Kemayah has reiterated the position of the ECOWAS Authority for the urgent release of President Alpha Conde, and the restoration of constitutional and democratic orders in Guinea.

At the same time, the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government has imposed sanction against Mali’s transitional leaders.

The sanction includes travel bans and asset freezes on all members of the transitional authority, as well as certain family members.

It followed a communication sent to regional leaders by the transitional authorities, which stated that they will not hold presidential and legislative elections in February next year.

They have promised to oversee an 18-month transition to democracy, with elections slated to be held on February 27, 2022.

But, according to a communiqué, ECOWAS said it has been informed by the interim authorities of their inability to meet the transition deadline.

The regional body also threatened more sanctions to be imposed before December this year, if no progress is made.

President George Weah was represented at the Summit on the situation in Mali and Guinea.
