More than 38,000 households to benefit from electricity connection in Monrovia

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-More than thirty-eight-thousand households in Greater Monrovia and its surroundings are expected to shortly benefit from electricity connection, under the Light Up Monrovia project.

The 22Million-Euro Monrovia Consolidation of Electricity Transmission and Distribution project is funded by the European Union, and supervised by the Liberia Electricity Corporation and implemented by MBH Power Limited.

On Thursday, October 1, 2020, the actual installation of electrical hardware kicked-off in the Peace Island Community in Congo Town, with the erection of the first light pole.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, an official of MBH Power Limited, Jesse Segbo, said:” The project also includes the training of LEC staff and students from various universities.”

Also speaking, the Head of Infrastructure of the European Union Delegation, Stefania Marrone, described the project as a   blessing.

At the same time, Acting Public Works Minister Madam Ruth Coker-Collins has been giving an overview of the Special Presidential Street Lighting Project.

Minister Coker-Collins said:” The total cost of the project is approximately 2.3 million United States Dollars, for duration of four years.”

According to her, the street light project includes the construction of concrete sidewalks for pedestrians and the planting of light poles among others.

She said:” The project is divided into three lots from the ELWA Junction in Paynesville to the Saint Paul Bridge on the Bushrod Island.”

The Acting Public Works Minister stressed that the project will not only improve the beauty of Monrovia, but also provide security for dwellers and street venders.

In the same vein, more than eighty communities in Liberia are expected to benefit from electricity by December this year.

It followed the approval of two-million US Dollars by President George Weah for the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) to procure transformers for the benefitting communities.

President Weah said:” The transformers will be installed in the communities, to begin new connection for the Christmas Season.”

The Liberian Leader said:” Despite the challenges, Government still remains c omitted to ensuring the City of Monrovia and other communities are electrified.”

Performing the symbolic lighting of several street lights at the SD Cooper Road Junction in Paynesville on Thursday, October 1, 2020, the Liberian Leader thanked international partners for the support.
