Make Rape a National Priority- Former Prez. Sirleaf

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – Former President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, wants the Government of Liberia make rape a national priority as done with the Corona virus.

Madam Sirleaf, praised government for its initial steps toward the fight against rape in the country. Former President Sirleaf said: “The rape situation has the propensity to negatively impact state governance and called for a united front to curb rape”.

Addressing participants at the start of a two-day Sexual Gender Based Violence (SGBV) Conference, Tuesday, September 8, 2020 at the Ministerial Complex in Monrovia, Madam Sirleaf, said the recent women’s protest against rape was necessitated to denounce their total opposition to the menace.

She has therefore; urged governments to ensure strict implementation of recommendations derive from the conference to end rape in the country. At the sometime, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Liberia, Kingsley Opoku Amaning says the fight against sexual Gender Base Violence (SGBV) remains a challenge.

Mr. Amaning, in a special speech at the ongoing two-day Sexual Gender Based Violence (SGBV) Conference, said SGBV, still remain a challenge, and want the Liberian government to create protection for women and girls from all sexual Gender Base Violence.

He has also described the efforts by former President Ellen Sirleaf-Johnson and President George Weah in the fight against rape as laudable.

The UN Coordinator, however, stressed the need to increase the fight and end all form of sexual rape and gender-based violence including rape. He encouraged all Liberians to work together to eliminate SGBV.

According to him, the recent anti-rape protest represented the cries, frustration and anger of all women, girls, and the entire Liberian society.
