House of Representatives Looks Into Anti-Rape Petition, Senate seeks concurrence to extend 3rd Session of the Legislature

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – The House of Representatives has mandated five of its Committees to probe the recent anti- rape petition submitted to the Legislature.

According to our reporter, the committees are Gender, Judiciary, Security, Health as well as Ways and Means.

Plenary’s decision Thursday followed the submission of a petition submitted by the Affiliation of Women and Child Rights Advocates.

The protesters among other things, are seeking amendment to the rape law, and increase budgetary allocation for the Judiciary to facilitate speedy trail of rape and other sexual and Gender Based Violence cases.

Meanwhile, the Committees are expected to report within a period of two weeks.

At the same time, the Liberian Senate is seeking the concurrence of House of Representatives to extend the 3rd Session of the Legislature for a period of one month, beginning September 1, 2020.

In a communication to the House of Representatives Thursday, August 28, 2020, the Liberian Senate said, it has already signed a certificate of extension.

ELBC Reporter said the Senate has also acknowledged several legislations and urgent businesses of national concern.

The Senate disclosed that their decision is consistent with Article 32B of the Liberian Constitution.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives is expected to review the request for further action on the matter.
