Ministry of Education extends reopening of schools for Junior High students by a week

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Ministry of Education has extended the reopening of school for grades six to nine by one week.

Education Minister Ansu Sonii attributed the extension to ensuring that school campuses are clean, and preventive measures are put in place at all schools.

Meanwhile, the Ministry says it supports the National Commission on Higher Education’s resolution, calling for the reopening of colleges and universities in Liberia.

Dr. Sonii, however, wants the Health Ministry to approve, on condition that institutions of higher learning will adhere to the health protocols.

Minister Sonii is cautioning school authorities to ensure that their students abide by all the preventive measures put in place by health authorities to contain COVID-19.

Meanwhile, reports say modalities are being worked out by the National Commission on Higher Education, in collaboration with the Ministries of Education and Health, to reopen tertiary education in Liberia.

The Acting Director General of the Commission, Professor David Dahn, said:” Prior to the reopening of the higher institutions, inspection of their facilities will be carried out to determine their preparedness to operate.”

Professor Dahn said:” A campus-based COVID-19 Response Team will be constituted, to have students carry out sensitization to contain the spread of the virus.”

Speaking in an ELBC interview Wednesday, August 5, 2020, Professor Dahn disclosed that behavior bonds will be signed by all students, committing themselves to wearing of face masks and other preventive measures.
