Pres. Weah advises Liberians to condemn violence

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Liberians have been urged to denounce violence and remain peaceful by adhering to the tenants of democracy.

President George Weah has repeated his opposition to violence and unrest in Liberia, recording that the Country has witnessed more violence for too long at the expense of peace and normalcy.

President Weah also re-emphasized that his Administration will maintain zero tolerance to violence and peace sustenance.

According to an Executive Mansion release issued over the weekend, President Weah made the call Sunday, August 2, 2020, during regular worship service at the Forky Klon Jlaleh Family Fellowship Inc. in the Rehab Community.

According to the release, the President’s assertions followed recent reported hostile reaction by some residents of Zwedru City in Grand Gedeh County, to officials of the opposition Collaborating Political Party, Mr. Alexander Cummings and Montserrado County District Ten Representative Yekeh Kolubah.

The citizens reportedly staged a protest in demand of Representative Kolubah immediate expulsion from the city-a hostile reaction they justified on the Representative’s habitual verbal attacks, including profanities against President Weah.

The Liberian Leader described the recent Zwedru violence as undemocratic, saying those culpable will be brought to justice through the Ministry of Justice.

The Liberian Chief Executive also noted that the fourteen years of civil conflict, which left over a half million Liberians and many more traumatized and displaced, is sufficient lesson for all Liberians to avoid violence and trouble.

Meanwhile, the Government of Liberia says it has begun investigating circumstances that led to Thursday, July 30, 2020, violence in Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County.

A Justice Ministry release issued Saturday, August 1, 2020, said the Ministry has commissioned a full scale investigation into the incident.

According to the release, the Superintendent of Grand Gedeh County, Kai Farley, has been summoned to assist with the investigation.

The Justice Ministry said:” The investigation will determine the lapses in security protocols  and other reasons, which contributed to the fracas.”

The Liberian Government has assured of additional security protocols, as the Country moves closer to the December 8, 2020, Senatorial Elections to avoid violence.
