Day off For Muslims in Civil Service as They Observe Abraham Day Friday

Monrovia, Liberia – President George Manneh Weah has instructed that Muslims who are part of the country’s civil service be granted excuse from work this Friday in observance of Abraham Day.

Abraham Day is an important Islamic Holy day which celebrates the willingness of Prophet Abraham to sacrifice his son in submission to Allah’s command.

The decision by President Weah is a welcome move for Liberian Muslims who have long for an Islamic Holiday in Liberia.

In a statement Thursday evening, the Liberian leader paid tribute to Muslims across Liberia and called on them to use the occasion to pray for continued peace and stability, especially at a time when the country is battling the Coronavirus pandemic.

The holy day, which will be observed this Friday, July 31, 2020, is marked by prayers and cattle sacrifices reminiscent of the Prophet Abraham.

President Weah said his administration is committed to ensuring that there is a conducive environment for all Liberians to peacefully co-exist and exercise their rights, including freedom of religion, as guaranteed by the constitution.

The Liberian Leader said Muslims have played a pivotal role in the country’s development over the years which is deserving of commendation.
