Education, Health Authorities to frame guidelines for resumption of school for 12th graders

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-President George Weah has instructed the Education and Health Authorities to formulate guidelines for the return of Twelfth Graders to school this June.

Twelfth Graders across Liberia are due to resume classes to prepare for the writing of the WASSCE exam, which will be administered in August this year.

President Weah’s instruction was contained in a statement issued over the weekend, ahead of the expiration of the State of Emergency.

The 2020 WASSCE exam, previously due to have been administered in April this year for Twelfth Graders in West Africa, will now be administered this August, following a consensus by member states of the West Africa Examinations Council.

The change in time is as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, which forced schools across the globe to be closed.

In a related development, President Weah says:” The State of Emergency, which is expected to expire on June 9, 2020, will not be renewed.”

President Weah said:” Given the Country’s level of experience with coronavirus and its mode of transmission, the strides being made in its containment, the   need for further extension of the co institutional measure is not required.”

Meanwhile, Government has announced plans to reopen the Roberts International Airport to commercial flights in June 21, 2020.

The President has also instructed the Ministers of Transport and Health, heads of the Liberian Civil Aviation Authority, the Liberian Airport Authority and the National Public Health Institute to publish the health protocols that will be instituted, once the airport resumes operations.

According to an Executive Mansion release issued over the weekend, hotels, guest houses, gaming centers are to also reopen beginning June 21st, 2020, with the observance of the required health measures.
