Senate seeks ways to find economic relief for citizens

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Liberian Senate says it is seeking leadership discussion with President George Weah to strategize ways to find an economic relief for the citizens in the wake of stay-home mandate by the Government of Liberia.

The Senate also wants President Weah address the Nation on issues of National concerns.

The Senate in its Tuesday’s session said the proposed discussion is necessary to bring relief to the citizens as the Government enforces measures for non-essential workers to stay home.

A statement issued by the Senate Press Bureau is quoted as saying the forum will focus on the urgent need for government to intervene, as the citizens abide by its mandate.

The decision by the Senate was triggered by Senator Peter Coleman’s queries, Chair of the Senate Committee on Health and also a member of the Incident Management Team set up to combat the coronavirus.

In a related development, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Autonomous Agencies and Commissions, Sinoe County Senator Milton Teahjay, says the Committee will this Friday, March 27,2020, conduct confirmation hearings for the newly commissioners of the National Elections Commission (NEC).

Addressing reporters Tuesday, March 24, 2020, at his Capitol Hill office, Senator Teahjay said all is now set for his Committee to execute its duties in line with Article 54 of the Liberian Constitution.

He said:” Though the Country is engaged with the fight of the deadly Coronavirus, the Committee will duly observe all health measures during the conduct of the hearings.”

Senator Teahjay also indicated that inquires and concerns from the public will be taken into consideration during the hearings.

Recently, President George Weah nominated Cllr.Ndubusi Nwabudika  as Chairman,Davidetta Brown Lasannah,Co-Chair,Cllr.Emmerstine Morgan-Awar,Commissioner,Floyd Sayor,Commissioner,Barsee Kpankpa,Commissioner and Josephine Kou Gaye, Commissioner of the National Elections Commission, pending confirmation by the Liberian Senate.
