LOFA COUNTY, LIBERIA-The Senator of Rivercess County and a member of the Health Committee at the Liberian Senate, Wellington Geevon Smith, has commended the Community Health Assistants (CHA) for their contributions to healthcare delivery across Liberia, particularly their efforts to encourage pregnant women to seek medical attention at health facilities.
Senator Smith noted that despite operating with little or no support, the community health workers continue to play a vital role in improving access to healthcare, especially in remote communities.
He said: “The workers are complementing the government’s efforts to strengthen the country’s healthcare system and, therefore, deserve increased support to enable them to perform their duties effectively”.
The Senator disclosed that the Community Health Assistants were previously supported by non-governmental organizations, but stressed the need for sustained assistance to ensure the continuation of their services.
According to Senator Smith, this ongoing tour of health facilities and communities is intended to provide firsthand insight into the challenges confronting the Health Sector, and help identify practical and amicable solutions.
He emphasized that engaging with health workers and assessing conditions on the ground are essential steps toward addressing the difficulties facing the sector and improving healthcare delivery across the country.
He spoke with reporters in an interview in Voinjama City, Lofa County.
