MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The United Nations has called on member states to strengthen their commitment to peace, development, and human rights as the world marks UN Day.
In his UN Day Message, the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, stressed that the future of humanity depends on countries working together to address global challenges.
Guterres said dialogue and diplomacy are critical pillars to mitigating conflicts as opposed to the use of weapons and violence.
He said,” For more than eight decades, the UN has worked to fight poverty and hunger, protect human rights, and provide emergency aid to people affected by wars, disasters, and displacement”.
The UN Secretary-General also urged countries to continue choosing dialogue over division, cooperation over confrontation, and solidarity over fear.
At the same time, President Joseph Boakai has reaffirmed Liberia’s commitment to international peace and cooperation as the country marks 81 years of partnership with the UN.
In his Special UN Day Address delivered in Monrovia on Monday, October 26, 2026, President Boakai highlighted the role of the UN in facilitating peaceful dialogues during Liberia’s 14 years of civil unrest.
President Boakai said,” The country remains grateful to the UN and other international organizations for leading efforts to restore the nation’s peace”.
He noted that Liberia stands proud of its role in the formation of a global body that has, over the decades, been dedicated to preventing war, promoting dialogue, protecting human rights, and advancing peace.
President Boakai also reiterated that his administration is committed to ensuring Liberia plays a role in the UN and its affiliated bodies.
