MONROVIA, Liberia – Liberia has taken its first major step into the future of clean transportation with the official launch of its first-ever hybrid electric vehicle on the local market.
The Toyota Corolla Cross HEV was unveiled on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, by Cfao Mobility Liberia on Bushrod Island, the exclusive distributor of Toyota vehicles in the country.
The event, attended by industry stakeholders and government officials, signaled a turning point for a nation seeking to modernize its roads and reduce its environmental footprint.
Addressing the gathering, Cfao Mobility Managing Director Navin Chander described the launch as a historic achievement not only for the company but for Liberia’s entire automotive sector.
“This milestone represents a major shift toward more sustainable and fuel-efficient transportation on Liberian roads,” Chander said.
According to the Managing Director, the introduction of the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid establishes a new benchmark within the local market.
The vehicle combines a gasoline engine with an electric motor, offering drivers lower fuel consumption and reduced emissions without compromising performance or reliability.
Also speaking, Cfao Mobility Assistant Sales Manager, Armah YOULO said the move positions Liberia among a growing number of African nations embracing hybrid technology as a practical bridge between conventional internal combustion engines and fully electric vehicles.
While electric charging infrastructure remains limited across much of the continent, hybrids offer an immediate and accessible solution for drivers seeking to cut fuel costs and emissions.
YOULO added that CFAO Mobility Liberia is committed to supporting the vehicle with trained technicians, genuine spare parts, and after-sales service, ensuring that Liberian drivers can adopt the new technology with confidence.
The launch has been welcomed by environmental advocates and transport experts, who see it as a modest but meaningful step toward diversifying Liberia’s vehicle fleet and reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels.
No official timeline for additional hybrid models has been announced, but industry observers expect growing demand as fuel prices remain volatile and awareness of climate-friendly options increases.
