Grand Bassa – Mines and Energy Minister, Matenokay Tingban, has called for stronger cooperation between residents of Grand Bassa County and Arcelor-Mittal Liberia to promote peace and development in concession communities.
Speaking over the weekend during a meeting with community leaders, the Minister said the government recently met with the company’s management and inspected its operations.
He said, “The Ministry is now engaging residents to hear their concerns and identify possible solutions”.
Minister Tingban emphasized the importance of bringing community representatives and the company together to discuss issues openly.
According to him, dialogue is the best way to prevent misunderstandings and conflicts.
He also encouraged Arcelor-Mittal Liberia to strengthen its community investment programs by supporting alternative livelihood opportunities for residents, including farming, poultry, and small business initiatives.
At the same time, residents of affected communities in Grand Bassa County have called for greater benefits from Arcelor-Mittal Liberia’s (AML) operations.
The concerns were raised during a meeting with Mines and Energy Minister, Matenokay Tingban.
Community members said, “Several development projects promised by the company remain incomplete despite years of mining activities”.
They also complained about limited job opportunities for residents of affected communities, especially young people.
The residents urged the government to ensure that AML fulfills its commitments and provides more benefits to local communities.
