Mines and Energy Minister, Matenokay Tingban, warns against illegal dredging activities in Liberia…

Rivercess – Mines and Energy Minister Matenokay Tingban has warned against illegal dredging activities in Liberia.

He said the government is prepared to enforce mining laws across the country strictly.

Speaking during a mining inspection tour in Rivercess County, Minister Tingban said anyone involved in illegal mining operations will face legal action.

He stressed that his entity is serious about protecting the environment and public resources.

The Minister particularly warned individuals constructing dredges for miners.

According to him, those aiding illegal dredging activities will also be prosecuted by the government.

Minister Tingban explained that the Cabinet has already endorsed the Ministry’s efforts to stop harmful mining practices.

According to him, illegal dredging continues to damage rivers and surrounding communities.

He added that only approved experimental permits for sand mining operations will be considered, clarifying that such permits will not cover gold or diamond mining activities.

At the same time, Assistant Minister for Mines at the Ministry of Mines and Energy, Samuel Momolu, says the government is increasing efforts to protect public infrastructure from illegal mining activities.

Minister Momolu made the statement during an assessment visit to mining communities in Rivercess County.

According to him, miners are now being restricted from operating too close to roads and public facilities.

He warned that mining near roads can cause serious environmental damage and safety risks.

Minister Momolu disclosed that the Ministry is working closely with public works authorities to strengthen monitoring measures.

He said communities must help report illegal mining activities around important infrastructure.

The Assistant Minister also raised concerns about the growing use of excavators at illegal mining sites. He said the government intends to confiscate unauthorized machines and investigate minerals recovered from such operations.

The Assistant Minister further noted that police and judicial authorities have been informed about the enforcement campaign; however, the Ministry, he said, remains committed to combating illegal mining activities across Liberia.
