MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The National Public Health of Liberia (NPHIL) has clarified that there is no active case of Ebola in Liberia.
NPHIL, however, says it has heightened and activated its surveillance system due to Liberia’s porous borders.
The Director General of NPHIL, Dr Siah Watta Camanor, said,” Liberia’s experience with Ebola and COVID-19 has strengthened the country’s preparedness for any potential outbreak”.
Speaking at the Ministry of Information Press Briefing on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, in Monrovia, Dr. Camanor called on the public to adhere to the practice of hand-washing hygiene.
The heightened surveillance in Liberia comes following the outbreak of Ebola in East Africa, especially given the devastating impact the virus had in Liberia in 2014.
In a related development, a Liberian public health expert, Dr. Dougbah Chris Nyan, wants researchers, medical practitioners, and public health experts to double their efforts in producing vaccines to prevent the spread of the Ebola outbreak in DR Congo and Uganda.
According to Dr. Nyan, a delay in producing vaccines might cause a global spread of the virus due to cross-border movements.
Speaking to Al-Jazeera, he said,” Though the strain of the virus is rare, when the vaccines used during COVID-19 are modified using the MRMA technology, there is a possibility of developing a vaccine for the strain and other Ebola virus strains”.
Speaking of the lessons learned from previous outbreaks, Dr. Nyan pointed to the deployment of expertise, the coordination of multi-national forces of experts in public health research and response, as major efforts made in eradicating the virus in 2024.
He noted that when these measures are put in place, the current situation of the outbreak will be addressed in the soonest possible time.
