MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Liberian Government has launched three critical policy documents to enhance food and nutrition security in the country.
The instruments include Liberia’s Preparedness Plan for Food and Nutrition Security Crises, 2025 Comprehensive Food Security and Nutrition Survey Report, and the 2025 Global Hunger Index.
At the launch of the documents, Agriculture Minister Alexander Nuetah described the instruments as an integral part of the government’s strategic agenda.
Minister Nuetah said,” Though Liberia has made significant progress in recent years, data in the possession of the ministry shows that the country needs to do more to avert recurrent shocks”.
Dr. Alexander Nuetah named climate variability and economic pressure as impediments to global disruption affecting the food system, which keeps putting Liberia’s population at risk.
Meanwhile, the United Nations has recommitted to working along with the Liberian Government and partners to translate findings in the three documents into targeted and equity-driven programs.
According to the UN, the goal is to strengthen agricultural production, protect livelihoods, and improve nutrition outcomes in Liberia.
Speaking on behalf of the UN, the Country Director of the IMF for Agricultural Development, Pascaline Barankeba, said, “The UN’s approach is to continue working in a coordinated and focused manner to improve key sectors of Liberia”.
Barankeba underscored health, nutrition, water and sanitation, hygiene, education, agriculture, climate, and social protection as areas of the UN’s focus.
She noted that the UN’s plan for Liberia’s Agriculture Sector includes support to food systems transformation from farms to markets, strengthening the inclusive value chain, improving food safety, among others.
