U.S. Embassy Selects ELBC’s Varflay Kamara to Partake in Int’l Visitor Leadership Program in U.S.

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The US Embassy has selected ELBC’s Varflay Kamara to participate in the prestigious International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) in the United States, from September 27-October 11,2025.

Kamara’s selection, according to the US Embassy, is based on his tremendous contributions to investigative reporting and media literacy.

The US Embassy also lauded Kamara for his efforts in educating the public on journalism issues, promoting critical thinking, supporting democratic discourse, and journalistic integrity in Liberia.

Joined by other professional journalists from across the world, the ELBC journalist will gain knowledge in investigative journalism, delve into the principles of freedom of speech, examine how these rights are safeguarded, challenged, and practiced within a democratic society.

Through meetings, site visits, and interactive activities, Varflay Kamara and colleagues will gain insight into the critical role journalists play in informing the public, while upholding professional responsibilities.

This year’s IVLP fellows in the Edward R. Murrow Program for Journalists will visit several States, including Washington D.C., Arizona, Ohio, and Kentucky.

Meanwhile, Kamara has lauded the US Embassy near Monrovia for his selection in a program that continues to build the capacity of some of the world’s brightest journalists.

He promised to use the skills, knowledge, and network to build a journalism career that strengthens democracy in Liberia and makes the world a better place.

Kamara said,” It is programs like the U.S. IVLP that strengthen the resolve to hold the powerful accountable, highlight the unheard voices, and shine the light on some of the nation’s darkest places.

The ELBC journalist thanked the U.S. Government through the Department of State and the U.S. Embassy in Monrovia for his selection, promising to ably represent Liberia and live up to the expectations of the sponsors of the program.

Since its inception in 1940, more than 230,000 international leaders have taken part in the IVLP, including over 500 alumni who have become heads of state or government, twelve Nobel Laureates, one thousand six hundred plus cabinet ministers, one thousand plus members of parliament, and numerous leaders in industry, science, and academia.

IVLP participants are nominated by the U.S. Embassies around the world.
