Greater Monrovia Flood Communities Get Assorted Hand Tools

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-A huge consignment of assorted hand tools and personal protective equipment has been presented to several flood communities in Greater Monrovia.

The consignment, valued at seventy thousand US Dollars, was secured from the World Bank-Financed Liberia Urban Resilience Project through the Public Works Ministry.

It includes two hundred twenty heavy-duty galvanized wheelbarrows, eight hundred ten steel blade shovels, four hundred forty carbon-steel blade cutlasses, and four hundred forty hand diggers.

Speaking on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, in Monrovia, Acting Public Works Minister Jocelia Taplah urged beneficiary communities to effectively use the hand tools to keep their drainages clean.

Acting Minister Taplah said,” The tools determine the Ministry’s way to get them actively involved in reducing constant flooding in Monrovia and its surroundings”.

Meanwhile, Liberia Urban Resilience Project Coordinator, Gabriel Flaboe, said,” The tools are to empower local communities to regularly engage in cleaning of their drainages”.

Flaboe said the initiative is to enhance community-driven sustainable drainage maintenance and flood prevention efforts by the Public Works Ministry in Greater Monrovia.

He said the donation to the forty-four communities was conceived to complement a recent emergency drainage cleaning exercise by the ministry.

The Project Coordinator, however, disclosed that the hand tools will be frequently monitored to ensure proper maintenance and sustainability of drainage cleaning initiatives.

Also speaking, the Head of Zinc Camp Community on the Bushrod Island, Musu Solomon, thanked the World Bank-Liberia Urban Resilience Project and the Public Works Ministry for the donation.

The Liberia Urban Resilience Project is a six-year partnership between the Government of Liberia and the World Bank to improve urban planning, flood, and climate resilience in Liberia, through transformative infrastructure and capacity building initiatives.
