Sen. Cyrus Describes Vehicle Registration, Driver License to Foreign Entity as Disturbing

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Liberian Senate Defense and Security Chair has described the outsourcing of vehicle registration and driver’s licenses to a foreign company as disturbing.

In a press statement issued recently, Lofa County Senator Momo Cyrus cited security and economic implications in the outsourcing of vehicle registration and license issuance to the Liberia Transport Management.

Senator Cyrus said, “No sovereign nation entrusts the custody, issuance, and regulation of vital identification and vehicular data to a foreign commercial interest. The act dangerously exposes Liberia to the risk of data breaches, undermines national control over the transportation system, and creates a direct pipeline for the exploitation of sensitive citizen information.”

The Lofa County Lawmaker added that the decision will disable the Transport Ministry of its statutory mandate, stripping it of core responsibilities and revenue-generating roles, as well as laying off citizens from their jobs.

The Senate Security Committee Chair noted that national security is not for sale, and as such, outsourcing core security functions —such as biometric data, geographic tracking, identity verification, and vehicular movement — to a foreign entity is tantamount to weakening the very foundation of internal security architecture.

Senator Momo Cyrus is, meanwhile, urging President Joseph Boakai to swiftly reverse the decision as a demonstration of his commitment to protecting Liberia’s sovereignty, ensuring transparency, and upholding national security and economic fairness.
