House Speaker Koon Pledges Nat’l Legislature’s Support…

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-House Speaker Richard Koon has pledged the National Legislature’s commitment to supporting the Office of War and Economic Crimes Court (OWECC).

Speaker Koon said, “The National Legislature stands ready to provide financial and legislative support through the passage of complementary instruments.”

He disclosed that the House will prioritize the provision of relevant legal, financial, legislative oversight, and all necessary support to accelerate the work of the Office.

Speaker Koon added that the House will ensure the review and subsequent passage of the draft bill seeking the establishment of a specialized Anti-corruption court.

House Speaker Richard Koon made the statement on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, in Monrovia, at the ongoing three-day high-level dialogue on collaboration and complementarity for corruption and human rights violations.

Meanwhile, Justice Minister Cllr. Oswald Tweh has called for enhanced collaboration among integrity institutions, OWECC, and the Justice Ministry.

Minister Tweh said, “The move will leverage collective strengths and ensure that all stakeholders are united in fostering transparency and accountability.”

The justice minister noted that it will promote effective sharing of resources, expertise, and best practices, and create a cohesive strategy to dismantle corruption and reinforce human rights protection.

Cllr. Tweh maintained that commitment will not only align with the ongoing national transitional justice process, but also ensure to building of a robust framework that delivers justice without compromising the rights and dignity of citizens.

In another development, the Liberian Senate has a bill to elevate the River Gee Vocational and Technical Training Institute to River Gee Technical College.

It followed a report from the Senate Joint Committee on Education and Judiciary on Tuesday, 8,2025.

Speaking to reporters on Capitol Hill, the proponent of the bill, Senator Francis Doepoh, described the passage of the bill as a significant milestone achievement for students of the county.

Senator Doepoh noted that the bill, if concurred by the House of Representatives, will elevate the Technical College to a full degree-granting institution.

He maintained that the move will create an opportunity for youths of the county to achieve vocational and technical knowledge to enhance their educational journey.

Meanwhile, the bill has been forwarded to the House of Representatives for concurrence.
