MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Liberia’s 55th National Legislature has officially reconvened for its 2nd Session.
The reconvening is consistent with Article 32 (a) of the Liberian Constitution which provides that the National Legislature shall assemble in regular session once a year on the Second Working Monday in January of each year.
The opening ceremony witnessed a grand march by members of both Houses of the National Legislature.
ELBC Legislative Reporter said following today’s resumption of session, members of that august body will give due consideration to the scrutiny and passage of several key instruments.
House Speaker Richard Koon delivered his opening address and called for greater collaboration among the three branches of the Liberian Government.
Speaker Koon assured of restoring public trust and confidence in the National Legislature.
He said:” This can be done through a robust process of ensuring transparency and accountability, and my leadership will work to introduce digital voting machines and develop an up-to-date website for the House of Representatives.
Speaker Koon stressed that it is key to advancing a more accountable and dignified National Legislature that works for all.
He spoke on Monday, January 17, 2025, during the first day sitting of the Second Session of the National Legislature.
The Montserrado County Lawmaker also vowed to rename committees to reflect the broader mandates to modernize the 55th National Legislature.
Meanwhile, Speaker Richard Koon has underscored the urgent need to harness peace and unity among members of the National Legislature.
The new Speaker of the House of Representatives said:” Given the recent occurrence at the House, members must come together in one accord to advance the interest of the country, redefine our paths, strengthen bonds, and uphold the core values for the sake of the people.”
House Speaker then vowed that the House will continue to enact laws that tend to address the socio-economic challenges confronting the people of Liberia.
