WHO Country Rep. Alarms over Increasing Rate of HIV/AIDS in Liberia

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The WHO Country Representative to Liberia, Dr. Peter Clement, is alarmed over the increasing wave of HIV in Liberia.

Dr. Clement said:” The increasing number of HIV cases is due to the lack of citizens’ willingness to adhere to regular HIV testing. If Liberia must succeed in ending HIV, citizens should be willing to do regular testing of the virus.”

Dr. Clement made the statement on Monday, December 2, 2024, when he served as a Guest Speaker at the 36th World AIDS Day celebration in Monrovia.

The WHO Country Representative to Liberia highlighted significant gains made by Liberia in the fight against HIV and urged Liberians to say no to discrimination and all forms of violence against people living with the disease.

Meanwhile, Dr. Cecelia Nuta, Chairperson of the National AIDS Commission, underscored the day’s importance worldwide.

Dr. Nuta said:” Liberia is among countries making immense strides to ending AIDS by 2030.”

She disclosed that a total of thirty-four thousand persons are living with HIV, and a total of twenty-seven thousand out of that number are currently receiving lifesaving treatment.

Dr. Nuta also said:” The celebration of World AIDS Day should serve as a reminder of the relentless efforts the country continues to make in the fight against HIV and AIDS.”
