MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The historic Providence Island in Monrovia is set to receive major transformation, as the Governments of Liberia and the United States close in on a massive deal.

The Liberian Government, through the Ministry of Information, Culture Affairs and Tourism, will on Friday, April 30, 2021, enter into an agreement with the US Government, through its embassy near Monrovia, and the World Monument Fund (WMF) for the development and preservation of the Providence Island.

The signing will be graced by senior officials of government, including President George Weah, US Ambassador Michael McCarthy, WMF’s Representative Stephen Battle and other dignitaries.

The agreement will pave the way for the funding by the US Government, through the WMF, for the transformation of the historical site into a major destination for international tourism and cultural preservation.

According to a Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism release issued Thursday, April 29, 2021, representatives from the WMF and the University of Virginia in the United States have already arrived in the Country, ahead of the signing ceremony.

The University of Liberia is also expected to be a part of the event.
