Gov. calls for calm, dispatches team to conflict area

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Liberian Government has called for calm in the reported conflict among some residents of Sand Beach mining area in Rivercess County.

It followed the reported maltreatment of some Nimbians by residents of the mining area.

Internal Affairs Minister Varney Sirleaf said:” The Ministry has dispatched a delegation headed by Assistant Internal Affairs Minister for Culture, Joseph Janga, to probe the cultural aspect of the incident.”

At the same time, Nimba County Senator Prince Johnson has also called for calm, but said the perpetrators must pay for their actions.

In a related development, Police Spokesperson Moses Carter said:” Victims of the conflict are undergoing medical treatment ahead of police investigations and prosecution in court.”

Meanwhile, a land dispute in River Gee County has left two acres of rice farm destroyed in the County.

ELBC River Gee County Correspondent said the people of Geeken destroyed the rice farm belonging to the people of Gbapia Potopu in the County.

Our Correspondent quoted the people of Geeken as saying the land on which the farm is situated has since been declared a buffer zone by authorities of the County.

The people of Geeken said it was a violation for the people of Gbapia-potopu to farm in the buffer zone.

However, local authorities are calling for calm and promised to find a resolution to the conflict.
