MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Inter-Religious Council of Liberia has endorsed a draft public health bill currently before the Liberian Senate for passage.
The bill, when passed, would make abortion legal up to eighteen weeks of pregnancy, once such action is administered by doctors.
The Secretary General of the Liberia Council of Churches (LCC), Rev. Christopher Toe, says that though the Inter-Faith Group supports initiatives that strengthen families, it does not endorse approaches that promote narrow definitions of family.
Rev Toe noted that the Inter-Religious Council of Liberia will not also endorse approaches that fail to recognize the diversity of Liberian households or overlook the urgent health and social challenges faced by women.
The LCC Secretary General spoke on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at a news conference in Monrovia when he read a statement on behalf of the Inter-Religious Council of Liberia, endorsing the draft public health bill.
At the same time, the Council has distanced itself from the planned “Strengthening Families” conference set to take place shortly in the country.
The Group also disclosed that it will not participate in any initiative seeking to define Liberia’s future through restrictive frameworks that do not align with the country’s social realities.
Rev. Christopher Toe wants faith leaders, women’s groups, civil society, and youth organizations to thoroughly examine the objectives, messages, and long-term implications of initiatives that aim to define family, morality, and social values.
Meanwhile, the Inter-Religious Council of Liberia has committed to advocating for a vision of family and community that aligns with the nation’s values, resilience, diversity, and collective aspirations.
