MONROVIA, LIBERIA- The Government of Liberia, through the Cabinet, has established two multi-agency committees to investigate the proliferation and illegal use of excavators and banned substances for mining purposes.
The Cabinet, through a communique, said it has observed the usage of the banned substance, Mercury, by some miners, particularly in southeastern Liberia.
The Communique also focused on the transformation of host communities of mining concessions, following the finalization of said concession activities as a key function of the established committee.
The Cabinet believes that the committee’s objectives align with the government’s broader commitment to responsibly address the adverse impact of mining operations long after investors have folded up.
According to the document, the Cabinet reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring that Liberia’s mineral wealth serves as a foundation for broad-based national prosperity, economic transformation, and inter-generational equity.
Meanwhile, the government has described the Mineral Sector as a key driver for Liberia’s inclusive economic growth and sustainable development.
The statement was made at a day-long Cabinet meeting on Thursday, March 27, 2026, in Monrovia, focusing on the country’s Mines and Energy Sectors.
The meeting was held under the theme: “Positioning Liberia for Mineral-Led Development and National Prosperity, Governance, Growth, and Accountability in Liberia’s Mineral Sector”.
The Cabinet, during the meeting, endorsed the finalization and adoption of the Gold Refinery Regulation, and the update and strengthening of the Exploration Regulation, among others.
The body also endorsed the development and submission of a New Mining Law, along with the completion of the General Mining Regulations, for legislative consideration.
