GRAND GEDEH COUNTY, LIBERIA-The Citizens of Grand Gedeh County are urging the Executive to prioritize the operationalization of the Putu Mining Concession.
In October 2025, the Chairman of the National Investment Commission (NIC), Jeff Blibo, told ELBC that the Government of Liberia was selecting one of three world-class companies to begin exploration at Putu Mountain.
In a series of engagements over the weekend, citizens expressed impatience with the delay in operationalizing the Putu Mining Concession.
The citizens named job creation, infrastructure development, and the provision of basic social services as opportunities the county stands to benefit from if work starts at the Putu Mountain.
Responding, Vice President Jeremiah Koung acknowledged the citizens’ concerns and assured them of President Boakai’s commitment to getting a reputable company explore the mountain.
At the same time, Grand Gedeh County Senator Thomas Nimely has publicly called for the dismissal of the County Superintendent, Alex Grant.
According to Senator Nimely, Superintendent Grant no longer enjoys the confidence of members of the County Legislative Caucus, elders, and ordinary citizens.
He accused the Superintendent of gross disrespect, taking unilateral decisions, and being unable to unite the county.
Senator Nimely called on President Joseph Boakai to make an urgent decision to relieve Superintendent Grant of his position.
Meanwhile, Vice President Jeremiah Koung, in whose honor the town hall meeting was convened, apologized to Senator Thomas Yayah Nimely, on behalf of the Superintendent, and noted the concerns raised during the meeting.
Still in the county, students at Grand Gedeh University are set to benefit from a modern student center soon.
It followed a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the modern student center over the weekend in Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County.
Performing the groundbreaking, Vice President Koung said,” The project signifies the government’s commitment to higher education and youth empowerment”.
Vice President Koung thanked former President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf for conceiving the idea of constructing community colleges across the country.
Also speaking, the President of Grand Gedeh University, Dr. Eric Gbotoe, thanked Vice President Jeremiah Koung for responding to the needs of the students.
