LOFA COUNTY, LIBERIA-The Ministry of Education (MOE) has broken ground for the expansion of Barkedu and to help complete the Sarkonedu Junior Public School project in Lofa County, aimed at improving education infrastructure and learning outcomes across Liberia.
At the ceremonies held over the weekend, Education Minister Dr. Jarso Jallah emphasized that education remains at the core of the government’s ARREST Agenda. She highlighted the Ministry’s priorities, including girls and inclusive education, teacher and administrator upgrading, technical and vocational training, early grade literacy and numeracy, and school feeding programs.
Dr. Jallah stressed that the projects are fully funded through Liberia’s 2025 national budget under the Public Sector Investment Project, underscoring government ownership and sustainability.
At Sarkonedu, the Minister praised the community’s initiative in starting the school project before government intervention, pledging to add science laboratories, computer technology, and guidance counselors to strengthen quality education.
In a related development, Lofa County Superintendent Junius Lavelah Massaquoi has underscored the historic significance of beginning construction on Barkedu’s first high school.
Superintendent Massaquoi stressed that the government’s action demonstrates seriousness in delivering on commitments made to the people of Lofa.
According to him, previous administrations had failed to provide such facilities, leaving young people without access to secondary education in their own community.
The new project, he said, ensures that students in Barkedu will now have the opportunity to continue their studies close to home.
He further highlighted plans to introduce vocational training programs and establish a community radio station, initiatives aimed at empowering youth, expanding opportunities, and strengthening local development.
