Environmental Protection Agency Frameworks Two Major Climate Threats for Liberia

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has outlined two major climate threats for Liberia.

Speaking at a news conference on Thursday, January 8, 2026, in Monrovia, EPA Executive Director, Dr. Emmanuel Yarkpawolo, named the rise in sea level, with projections indicating an increase of up to one meter in the future.

Dr. Yarkpawolo said,” Nearly 60 percent of Liberia’s population is living along coastal areas, noting that thousands of Liberians and key infrastructures, such as roads, hospitals, and communities, are at risk”.

According to him, the second threat is unpredictable and intense rainfall, which is destroying crops, reducing harvests, and increasing food insecurity, especially for farmers who depend on natural rainfall.

The EPA boss also emphasized that these challenges are already affecting national development.

Meanwhile, EPA Executive Director, Dr. Emmanuel Yarkpawolo, says the Liberian Government is actively responding to these challenges through national and international efforts.

Dr. Yarkpawolo said,” The country continues to advocate globally for climate justice and financial support for vulnerable nations”.

He noted that domestically, the government is implementing coastal defense projects and other initiatives to improve weather forecasting.

Dr. Yarkpawolo also mentioned modern agricultural research to reduce rice production time and stronger enforcement of environmental laws to protect forests, wetlands, and waterways, as additional steps being taken by the government.

The EPA boss believes that addressing these challenges will require collective efforts, noting that the fight is not a government fight alone.

Dr. Yarkpawolo is also calling on citizens and residents to protect forests and wetlands and avoid blocking drainage systems.
