MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Ministry of Education has taken administrative actions against the Berea Christian Academy of Excellence school in Sinkor.
The Ministry, in a release, said two hundred fifty thousand Liberian dollars has been imposed on the school for violations of child protection regulations.
Additionally, Julia Bohui, Principal, Jeremiah Zonnoe, Registrar, Anthony Karmah, Teacher, Joseph Zaza, Teacher, and Edwin McDonald, Teacher, have been suspended from all educational activities pending the outcome of the investigations.
On December 12, 2025, the Ministry received reports that an eleven-year-old tenth-grade student, Roseline Matilda, along with at least seventeen other students, was subjected to corporal punishment and physical abuse during a school-sanctioned disciplinary exercise.
The release said primary findings established that the acts involved multiple members of the school’s administration and teaching staff, and that one student reportedly lost consciousness and was hospitalized.
The Ministry noted that the incident constitutes a grave violation of Liberian law and the national prohibition on corporal punishment.
Meanwhile, the Liberia National Police (LNP) has launched a criminal investigation against the accused.
They have been arrested and are currently under investigation for aggravated assault.
A full compliance assessment of the school is also underway, covering facilities, staffing, administrative structures, and permit requirements.
According to the Ministry of Education, the future operations of the school will be determined based on the findings.
The Government of Liberia has, at the same time, reiterated its zero-tolerance policy toward corporal punishment and child abuse in all schools, public and private.
