MONROVIA, LIBERIA-A high-level Liberian delegation in Vienna, Austria, has taken part in a weeklong legislative assistance meeting with the International Atomic Energy Agency, aimed at finalizing Liberia’s draft National Nuclear Law.
The engagement marks a major milestone in strengthening Liberia’s legal and regulatory framework for the safe, secure, and peaceful use of nuclear science and technology.
The seven-member delegation includes lawmakers, legal experts from key government institutions, and scientists from the Environmental Protection Agency’s Environmental Research and Radiation Safety Department, Liberia’s National Authority for Radiation Protection.
The diverse team reflects a whole-of-government approach to developing the Country’s nuclear governance system.
Liberia’s engagement with the IAEA is being coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which serves as the National Liaison Office for IAEA technical cooperation.
In a related development, the Liberian Community in Kenya, along with representatives of the Liberian student community, has honored the Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency, Dr. Emmanuel Yarkpawolo, for his national service and contributions to environmental governance and institutional reforms.
At the event on Thursday, December 18, 2025, in Nairobi, the President of the Liberian Community in Kenya, Marcus Weah, commended Dr. Yarkpawolo for engaging Liberians in the diaspora and for his leadership at the EPA.
Mr. Weah pointed to visible improvements in the EPA’s institutional reforms, regulatory enforcement, and environmental oversight.
He added that the Liberian community in Kenya, estimated at over 2,000 people, including a growing student population, remains committed to Liberia’s development.
They recommended the appointment of a Liberian Consul General to address the welfare and documentation needs of Liberians.
In response, Dr. Yarkpawolo thanked the community and students for the honor and described the engagement as encouraging.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to working along with Liberians abroad as partners in national development and pledged to convey their concerns and recommendations to the appropriate authorities upon his return to Liberia.
